Conference: Dis/Trusting the Institution(s) of Literature

Poster by Alex Kroll
The conference springs from our mutual interest in the “institutional turn” in literary scholarship in recent years and the related growth in literary sociology, which has been hugely important to my thinking in developing this project. The call for papers from last year gives a bit more context; I’d also recommend reading the recent Post45 cluster about institutional literary scholarship, which specifically responds to Jeffrey Lawrence’s important intervention in the field, “Mobilizing Literature” (ELH, 2024).
We’ll be joined by three brilliant keynote speakers whose work has, collectively, been vital to the study of literary institutions – and, importantly, to reflecting on what we’re doing when we study institutions – over a number of years: Sarah Brouillette, Simone Murray, and Chris Newfield.
We’re excited about this one! If you are interested in joining us, you can register at the link on the conference page, or send us an email (trust.ucd@gmail.com) if you have any questions.
In June, my colleague Adam Kelly and will be hosting a conference titled Dis/Trusting the Institutions(s) of Literature.
This is a collaboration between my project (which you can read more about elsewhere on this website), and Adam’s project on imaginative literature and social trust, both of which are funded by Research Ireland. People are calling it the crossover event of the summer.
